Nos anais da História de Portugal, poucas figuras se destacam tanto como D. Sebastião, chamado de Rei Desejado. Nascido a 20 de janeiro de 1554, em Lisboa, ascendeu ao trono de Portugal aos três anos de idade, após a morte do seu avô, D. João III. O seu reinado, embora de curta duração, deixou uma marca indelével na consciência da nação, envolta em mitos e mistérios.
A infância de D. Sebastião foi marcada pela tragédia e pela incerteza. O seu pai, o príncipe D. João Manuel, faleceu antes do seu nascimento, deixando o reino numa situação de turbulência e com um futuro incerto. Nascido entre fervorosas orações e expectativas, D. In the annals of Portuguese history, few figures loom as large as Dom Sebastião, nicknamed the Desired King. Born on January 20, 1554, in Lisbon, he ascended to the throne of Portugal at the age of three, following the death of his grandfather, King João III. His reign, though short-lived, left an indelible mark on the nation's consciousness, shrouded in myth and mystery.
Dom Sebastião's childhood was marked by tragedy and uncertainty. His father, Prince João Manuel, passed away before his birth, leaving the kingdom in turmoil and an uncertain future. Born amidst fervent prayers and anticipation, Dom Sebastião was baptised on the eighth day, receiving his name in honour of Saint Sebastian, and earning him the epithet "The Desired."
Under the regency of his grandmother, Queen Catarina, and later his great-uncle, Cardinal Henrique, Portugal navigated a turbulent period marked by colonial expansion and religious fervour, followed by Dom Sebastião's ambitious plans to launch a crusade in Morocco, to revive past glories and combat the encroaching Ottoman threat.
Legend has it that a black knight came to see him, insisting on an audience. After several days, the king finally spoke to the knight who claimed to see the future - one with a tragic end if the king insisted on trying to conquer Africa. But the king dismissed the prophecy and threw out the knight after he revealed that he was actually a woman disguised. Nevertheless, the king would see this black knight several times during his final battle.
On August 4, 1578, the Portuguese army suffered a devastating defeat at Alcácer-Quibir, and amidst the chaos, Dom Sebastião's fate became shrouded in uncertainty. Accounts vary, with some claiming he perished in battle, while others suggest he disappeared mysteriously. Legends emerged of his defiant refusal to surrender.
So emerged Sebastianism, a phenomenon that transcends mere historical fact, evolving into a complex belief system centred around the mythical return of Dom Sebastião, deeply rooted in Portuguese and Brazilian folklore. Even before his birth, Dom Sebastião was heralded as O Encoberto, "the hidden-one," the mythical ruler destined to establish a powerful Portuguese empire. The dismal outcome of his reign and the loss of Portuguese independence to Spain gave rise to Sebastianist legends, with believers anticipating his eventual return to inaugurate the Quinto Império, or Fifth Empire.
Reports of sightings began soon after his death, and at least four claimants appeared between 1580 and 1610. Brazilian Sebastianists tied the legends with their New World experiences, leading to three messianic movements in the 1800s, and even linked their rebellions to the long-awaited king. However, others claim his body was found on the rocks after the battle of Alcácer-Quibir.
Sebastianism stands as a testament to the enduring power of myth and the human longing for redemption. Across centuries and continents, the belief in Dom Sebastião's return has persisted, offering solace in times of turmoil and inspiring generations to dream of a brighter future under the reign of the hidden king.
